Choco’Lite

The discontinued candy graveyard is filled with confections that one day made us happy, then completely dropped off the radar. Such was the case with a sweet treat from the 70s called Choco’Lite, an airy candy bar consisting of whipped milk chocolate and something described on the wrapper as “crispy chips.” Today, they are but a memory.

Introduced by Nestlé in 1972, the Choco’Lite bar consisted of milk chocolate that was whipped, resulting in numerous air pockets that made it much less dense than the typical candy bar. It was given texture thanks to the aforementioned “crispy chips” which remain somewhat of a mystery.

Unlike a Nestlé Crunch bar, which uses puffed rice to achieve its crunch, the Choco’Lite bar contained no rice, nor anything else mentioned in the ingredients that would account for the crispy texture.

To this day, people still debate what gave these bars that distinctive taste, but one thing that seems universally agreed upon is that they were one-of-a-kind and delicious.

Today, you will not find a Choco’Lite bar in any of the many available retro candy outlets. Some point to the modern Nestlé Aero bar as a suitable substitute, but it really bears little resemblance. Sure, it’s light and airy, thanks to its use of whipped chocolate, but gone are those enigmatic crispy chips that gave the Choco’Lite its distinctive crunch.

And, while we are all left to ponder what exactly made these confections so special, there is little disagreement that they were wonderful – a treat from yesteryear, both fondly remembered and sorely missed.

If you have fond memories of biting into a Nestlé Choco’Lite candy bar back in the day, I hope you’ll share your recollections with all of us in the comments section.

Loved this candy bar so much so that I would ask for a giant one in my easter basket instead of a chocolate bunny. Wish they still made it!

  2. cathy says:

Oh and I bet those chips were toffee chips!

    • Rachel krissinger says:

Omg! They were toffee chips!! ❤️ I adored this candy bar!! I used to suck the chocolate off some of the chips and put them to the side an eat them later!

  3. Norman Welch says:

I definitely miss them! Maybe we should petition Nestlé to bring the original formula product back?

    • Definitely! How do we get something like that going. They would make a killing!

    • Kim H. says:

I wrote Nestle’ asking for its return

    • Amy says:

      YESSSS!!!!

    • Ebo Russ says:

I too loved the Choco Lite bar. I reached out to Nestle and they made no inclination they’d consider bringing it back. They offered me Nestle Crunch coupons which I happily turned down. I told them… although I enjoy a Nestle Crunch every now and then they are nothing like a Choco Lite. I did reach out to ‘iconic candy’ after seeing they recently rebooted the Bar None bar. Haven’t heard anything back yet.

I agree they should bring it back been looking for years if I can buy them.

One of my favorites! Not many people remember Chocolite but then again most people dont remember the Marathon bar either. Another old favorite you cant find anywhere.

    • Mike says:

The Marathon lives on as the Curly Wurly. Same candy bar..and available for purchase. 😉

  5. Dave says:

My grandparents used to own a grocery store in Brooklyn, NY and I used to have my dad order these because I ate them like crazy!

  6. Jon says:

LOVED the Chocolite bar (as well as Marathon, and…oh geez don’t get me started on how much candy I ate). I collect old food wrappers and packaging so of course old original wrappers of these chocolate bars had to be added to my collection…I still look at them with fond memories of picking them up at stationary stores (when I bought my weekly comic books) either in Wheatley Heights/Wyandanch near where I lived or when my mom went shopping at the Waldbaums in Deer Park I’d run into that stationary store next door as well for my comic-candy-trading cards fix… The Aero bar is similar enough to bring back a similar feeling, but yes, it’s still a little different, just slightly. Curly Wurley does however feel like a Marathon bar…

  7. Wendy A says:

I’m with Norman on the Chocolite! My sisters and I still talk about those awesome candy bars. And the 100,000 dollar bar was a Carmel braid wrapped in chocolate

Best bar ever. When I was pregnant with my oldest, I was put on weight gaining diet of 3500 calories a day. These were a big part of my daily routine, lol. Nothing compares to their taste. Wish they’d come back!!

My favorite!! No one seems to remember it but me down here in Louisiana.

  10. Jeylin says:

My husband’s Uncle Fred was one of the inventors of the equipment that made the air crisps in what was my favorite candy bar of all times. It was invented at the Nestle plant in Fulton, NY. And the inventors worked for Nestle, so any inventions became the sole property of Nestle Inc. No credit or acknowledgment given and I believe they signed tight confidential clauses. He sadly passed away last year. But I felt pretty proud to be related to him!!
Also- I believe the only site that had the equipment that could make the crisps was the Fulton plant.

  11. Kelly Hannon says:

Miss the chocoLite bar. Wish they would bring it back even if it’s just a limited time.

  16. Bill says:

Was it the same as Europe and Canada’s Aerobar?

  17. Aimee says:

I have sweet memories too if the chocolite. Bar. There’s never been another candy bar like it. I do think that some of those memories are wrapped up in the 1970s themselves. What changes we have seen in our world since then! And how I miss th world as it was back then

  18. Kathy says:

I have been looking at all vintage candy stores whenever I am around one to see if I can find this awesome candy bar. I remember it very vividly as a kid. Bummer it is not around anymore.

  19. Gina says:

I would walk down to the corner store called Maitlands with my brother, sister, and babysitter to get this bar. We all loved it. Maybe we can get the word out and they can make this again!

  20. Jenny P. says:

The Chocolite was one of my favorites at the ripe old age of ten. My weekly allowance of a quarter was often saved to purchase and eat two at time, often with Tab soda!

  21. Penny Mason says:

I loved these candy bars!! They were my favorite and I have looked for them everywhere. Let’s petition Nestle to bring them back!!!

  22. Julie says:

My hands-down favorite candy bar as a little kid. LOVED this so much! I have had the Nestle Aero bar, which is good, but nothing beat opening up a Chocolite chocolate bar and seeing the little fan shapes stamped into them. They kind of reminded me of those sugar candy orange slices as well. Great days, great candy.

  23. Jessica P says:

Definitely one of my favorites! That and the Marathon Bar. I used to get one or the other when we would go shopping on Saturday’s. I was only like 3 or 4 when I first remember these! Wish They would bring both back!

  24. Rhonda says:

My favorite candy bar of all time. Please bring it back.

  25. Mary says:

I liked this candy bar. But I have to tell you that I liked the commercial’s song even better! That line never left my mind – “You never felt so good about chocolate…..” I always wondered what ever happened to Chocolite. I guess it didn’t sell well enough to continue.

  26. Brian says:

I didn’t remember them by name, but I do recall eating the distinctive-looking chocolate bar with that design, and biting into the crunchy texture, when I was young in the 70’s. I’d forgotten all about them until now!

  27. Rick says:

    You can make it yourself.
I made it by accident for my daughter’s school project.
We had to fill cupcakes with chocolate on the bottom.
I took 6 Hershey bars melted it in a pot. It boiled slowly and the small bubbles stayed. We filled the cupcakes and what was left over hardened and cooled.
    Wa la!! Chocolite !!!
Try it yourself!!! You will love it. ❤️

  28. Mike says:

In the early ’70s I would buy these for 15 cents a piece, mom gave me a dollar to spend after school and I would buy five and still have a quarter left over, lol
